Irish Soda Bread

Nothing hits the spot quite like homemade bread straight out of the oven – right?

Although this bread is not gluten free, it is extremely easy to make and unlike it’s shop bought ‘cousins’, there are no hidden sugars or chemicals. Happy days!

Homemade bread makes a great house gift  – perfect for the festive season when most of us would welcome a little hand in the kitchen!

P.S. bread freezes really well so it’s a good idea to batch cook and store for a rainy day!


Ready in

200g of wholegrain flour

150g plain flour

50g finely ground oatmeal

1 tsp bicarbonate of soda

1 large egg

300ml buttermink

1 tsp salt

Add the flour, salt, bicarbonate of soda and oatmeal to a large bowl and combine.

In another bowl whisk up the egg and buttermilk.

Add a whole in the centre of the flour mixture and add buttermilk and egg mixture.

Combine using your hands to create a soft dough remove from the bowl onto a lightly floured surface shape into a ball.

Place the ball of dough onto a baking tray with non stick paper.

score the top of the bread dough with a knife in any shape you like and place in a preheated oven at 185 degrees for 50 minutes.

Remove from the oven and cool on a wire rack.
